⭐ How to Play Articulation Tic Tac Toe
These games follow the familiar rules of Tic Tac Toe, with speech sound practice incorporated into each turn.
- Give each player a set of counters or a different coloured pen.
- Players take turns choosing a picture on the game board.
- Before claiming the square, the player practises saying the target word.
- The player marks the square with an X or O, or covers it with a counter.
- The first player to claim three squares in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins!
You can adapt the number of repetitions and level of support according to the child’s current speech sound skills.
For example, children might practise each target word several times before marking their square.
For children ready for more challenging practice, you can encourage them to use target words in short phrases or sentences.
⭐ Supporting Speech Sound Practice
These Later Speech Sounds Articulation Games provide opportunities for children to practise selected speech sounds in a structured, motivating activity.
The games can be used to support:
- Production of target speech sounds in single words
- Practice across different word positions
- Repeated opportunities to produce target words
- Progression towards phrase or sentence-level practice, where appropriate
- Speech sound practice during home activities
The games are intended to complement an individualised Speech and Language Therapy programme.
Target selection, cueing and the level of practice should be guided by the child’s speech sound assessment and therapy goals.
