⭐ How to Play Articulation Tic Tac Toe
These games follow the familiar rules of Tic Tac Toe, with speech sound practice built into each turn.
- Print the required game board and provide counters or pens.
- Players take turns choosing a picture on the board.
- Before claiming the square, the player practises saying the target word three times.
- Once the word has been practised, the player marks the square with an X or O, or covers it with a counter.
- The first player to claim three squares in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins!
You can adjust the number of repetitions and level of cueing to suit the child’s current speech sound skills.
⭐ Extra Practice Tip: Colour, Then Play!
For additional speech sound practice, try using the black-and-white game boards in two stages.
First: Encourage children to colour the pictures while practising the target words.
Then: Play Tic Tac Toe using the same board, asking children to practise the words again before claiming each square.
This provides additional opportunities for speech sound practice while keeping the activity enjoyable and engaging.
⭐ Speech Sound Skills Targeted
These L and L Blends Articulation Games can be used to support:
- Practising /l/ in single words
- Practising /l/ in different word positions
- Producing word-initial /l/ consonant clusters
- Repeated opportunities to practise selected target words
- Progression towards phrase and sentence-level practice, where appropriate
- Structured articulation practice in therapy and at home
The individual /l/ boards and /l/ blend boards allow therapists to select targets according to each child’s assessed needs.
Children who are still developing accurate production of the individual /l/ sound may need a different level of support from children working on /l/ blends.
The games are intended to complement an individualised Speech and Language Therapy programme, with target selection and cueing guided by the child’s speech sound assessment.
