⭐ How to Play Articulation Tic Tac Toe

These games follow the familiar rules of Tic Tac Toe, with speech sound practice incorporated into each turn.

1. Give each player a set of counters or a different coloured pen.
2. Players take turns choosing a picture on the game board.
3. Before claiming the square, the player practises saying the target word correctly three times.
4. The player marks the square with an X or O, or covers it with a counter.
5. The first player to claim three squares in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — wins!

You can adapt the number of repetitions and the level of support according to the child’s current speech sound skills.

For children who are ready for more challenging practice, you can also encourage them to use target words in short phrases or sentences.

⭐ Supporting Fronting and Backing Speech Sound Patterns

These Articulation Tic Tac Toe games include sounds that may be relevant when supporting children who demonstrate fronting or backing patterns.

Fronting occurs when sounds typically produced towards the back of the mouth, such as /k/ and /g/, are replaced with sounds produced further forward, such as /t/ and /d/.

Backing occurs when sounds typically produced towards the front of the mouth, such as /t/ and /d/, are replaced with sounds produced further back.

The games provide opportunities for repeated practice of selected target sounds and words within a motivating activity.

The /ŋ/ (‘ng’) boards also provide additional practice opportunities for children working on this sound.
